Jamie Carragher - A true leader, a true legend, a true Red

A lot can happen in a span of 17 years. A lot has happened in the last 17 years, which saw the unfolding of a stellar career of one of the greatest defenders in the Premier League. He is none other than Jamie Carragher. His commitment to Liverpool‘s cause and honour was depicted in his desire to stay with Liverpool throughout his whole career, which is an exemplary comportment. His journey as a young Everton fan to getting his name inscribed on the golden pages of Liverpool history is a memorable and an eventful one.

Even though he was an ardent Everton supporter, he joined Liverpool academy at the age of 9, which marked the inception of a life-long affair with Liverpool. Being one of the best in the academy, he took no time to cement his place in the youth team which won the 1996 FA Youth Cup. As he was very versatile, he was played by the managers in various positions. He was meant to fill the positional holes in the team rather than playing at a fixed position. He could be spotted everywhere on the field which could have been the origin of the popular phrase “A team of Carraghers”. He made his debut in the 1996 season and became a regular the following year.

From then on, there was no turning back. Though he was hit by controversies and injuries for about a couple of years, his talents just couldn’t be suppressed. He went on to win the Champions League with Liverpool, playing as a centre-back. That is still considered one of his most important defensive displays where he was a wall to block the lethal attack of AC Milan. He also was named Liverpool Player of the Season for back to back seasons and represented England in the European Championship and 2006 World Cup.

He set new records for the most number of appearances in Europe the following year. He has won 7 major trophies with Liverpool and 11 trophies overall. Silverware could be considered as a player’s achievement in a club, but there was more to it than that with Jamie Carragher. He set an example for younger players coming in to the club with his commitment and skills. He was someone that many teams lacked and still lack. He was always seen standing tall with complete domination. He was someone who was reliable and disciplined, which can be seen in his consistency and disciplinary record. Moreover, he was a team player who would give every drop of blood and sweat for the team, which separates him from many of the modern day players. He was a rare jewel who never lost lustre.

Earlier this year, he announced his retirement from professional football. He made his 700th appearance in a Liverpool shirt and also made his 500th league appearance for Liverpool.

Fans knew that this farewell was inevitable. But the voice in every fan’s heart screamed “just one more season Jamie”. He was subjected to criticism as a controversial player. But at the end of the day which genius isn’t? Besides, Carragher was an epitome of raw talent, aggression and commitment which shouldn’t go unappreciated. He was a true Red through and through. Legend is an understatement for a player like him. This is the story of a man whose game conveyed passion, whose actions conveyed loyalty and whose heart forever oozed dedication and love for Liverpool.

Legends may come and legends may go but there is only one like him. That is James Lee Duncan Carragher.

Adios Legend.

You’ll Never Walk Alone.
