Javier Hernandez spent 5 years at Manchester United before making the move

Javier Hernandez who has been with Manchester United since 2010, finally left the club to join Bayer Leverkusen in a deal that cost around £7.3 million. The striker cited a need to feel “important and happy again” as the reason he left Old Trafford, as reported by Sky Sports.

The Red Devils signed Chicharito just a few days before the 2010 World Cup began and the striker had a smashing outing with his national side Mexico at the tournament. He went on to create a reputation as a super-sub for the English Giants in the following season under Sir Alex Ferguson. He was afforded a few starting berths but only had a sustained run in the first team during his first season at United.

The 27-year-old’s appearances count after that dwindled and never really picked up. Last season he was loaned out to Real Madrid where he scored 9 goals for them in 33 appearances for them. His return to Manchester United didn’t show too much promise before he was shipped out to Leverkusen.

The Mexican forward spoke about his decision to make the switch from the Premier League to the Bundesliga because Bayer made him feel important again.

He said: “I want to go back to feeling important and happy. I want to find happiness.”

"Bayer made me feel important and loved and coming here was not a difficult decision to make. They made me feel wanted."

Hernandez made a few appearances for United after his return from Madrid this season but did not score in any appearances. In fact, he came under some criticism for the sitters he missed in the European qualifying game against Club Brugge. Nonetheless, he is keen to help his new team achieve their goals.

“I want to help and achieve important things. I have felt very loved.”

“I hope to accomplish things in my head and in my heart,” Hernandez added.

There is still a chance that the former Manchester United man could face his former employers again this season in the Champions League given that both Bayer Leverkusen and Manchester United progress past the group stages. The German club though has a tough task ahead of them as they’ve been drawn into Group E alongside Barcelona, Roma, and BATE Borisov.

Manchester United are expected to get past the group stages but could potentially face some issues while facing Wolfsburg, PSV Eindhoven and CSKA Moscow.
