Terry and Lampard could coach England’s junior players

Chelsea captain, John Terry, is one of the former England players who has been offered a coaching role by the English FA, alongside former English midfielders Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard.

The reported appointment of Terry is a significant move in healing the rift between the FA and the Chelsea legend, who captained the English national side and retired with 78 caps.

According to The Sun, Terry who has already begun his coaching badges, will the offered an olive branch by the FA to join Lampard and Gerrard to mentor and coach England’s young talent.

The Sun also understands that current England manager, Gareth Southgate, is keen to involve ex-seniors players in his coaching setup. In return, the FA will grant the players a quick route in gaining the UEFA A and Pro Licenses and help them get into management – cutting the process time by almost 18 months.

England’s technical director, Dan Ashworth, has already spoken to Terry to see whether the 36-year-old is interested in the role.

It is understood that John Terry is open to the FA invite and may take up the opportunity. The player is out of contract at the end of the season and it is uncertain if he will be offered a new contract.

Terry, who was twice stripped of his England captaincy during his international career, is open to the FA invite given that both the chairman and the chief executive have changed since he retired after Euro 2012.

Chelsea defender lost the armband in 2012 when he was on trial for allegedly racially abusing Anton Ferdinand. After being cleared by the court, the central defender quit playing for England as he felt that he was not treated properly by the FA.

In recent years, The FA have found it difficult to encourage ex-players to take up full-time coaching and hence would offer the trio a coaching programme to suit them.

Other players could be offered a coaching role

Reports also suggest that the FA have reached out to David Beckham as well. The 41-year-old has shown little interest, probably due to his various commercial interests and ambassadorial roles.

Current England captain, Wayne Rooney, has also expressed his desire to go into coaching after he retires and the FA consider him a future student.
