AS Roma mid-fielder Kevin Strootman has been effectively ruled out for the season, and his dreams of playing in the World Cup have been shattered, following the injury he suffered last night in the 1-0 loss at the hands of Napoli.

Strootman was stretchered off after only 12 minutes last night, and latest reports have suggested that the mid-fielder has torn his Anterior Cruciate Ligaments, which will keep him on the sidelines for approximately 9 months. This confirms that the Roma mid-fielder will be playing no part in the World Cup for the Dutch national team.

The 24-year-old’s MRI has shown torn anterior cruciate ligaments, a broken meniscus and a damaged medial ligament on the inside of the joint.

The injury comes as a massive blow to Roma and Netherlands, as Strootman had become an integral part of both the teams. Louis van Gaal had recently branded the mid-fielder untouchable, alongside sensational striker Robin van Persie and explosive winger Arjen Robben., which means had he not suffered the injury, Strootman would have been a guaranteed starter.

Louis van Gaal told knvb.nl : “This is dramatic for Kevin. I can imagine that his world collapsed.

“Kevin stood with both his club AS Roma, as with Orange for a very important period.

“Kevin had a very big contribution to our qualification for the World Cup in Brazil. But the worst is for Kevin, who sees his dreams are shattered.”

Twitter was flooded with Tweets from the world of football, who extended their support to the Dutch footballer following his injury:
