Madrid, Oct 22 (IANS) Spanish football club Levante have named Lucas Alcaraz as their new coach.

Alcaraz Tuesday replaced Jose Luis Mendilibar, who was sacked late Monday night after just eight matches in charge with the club bottom of the table with just four points from one win, one draw and six defeats, reports Xinhua.

Alcaraz has signed a contract until the end of the 2015-16 campaign, although whether or not he fulfills that will depend a lot on whether he is able to save the club from relegation this season.

The 48-year-old has a long curriculum as a coach in Spain having led Recreativo Huelva, which he took to promotion to the Primera Liga and also to the final of the King's Cup, Murcia, Racing Santander, Xerez and Almeria and also Greek side, Aris de Salonica.

He will make his debut as coach away to Celta Vigo this coming weekend.

Mendilibar was the second coach to be sacked in Spain this season, losing his job a matter of hours after fellow strugglers, Cordoba replaced Albert Ferrer with Miroslav Djukic.
