Lionel Messi was voted the best Champions League player of all time

Lionel Messi has been voted the best Champions League player of all time by European football fans in a poll conducted by MasterCard, one of the sponsors of the UEFA Champions League. The poll was done across Europe and presented in Berlin ahead of the Champions League final on Saturday night.

The Barcelona talisman received 27% of votes, a little more than double the votes that Zinedine Zidane got (12%). Cristiano Ronaldo finished just below Zidane, with 11% of votes, and was followed by Ronaldo Nazario de Lima, who got 7% of the votes, and David Beckham rounded off the list, with 4% of votes.

Messi received most votes from people in the age-group of 55 and above, as he garnered 33% of the votes cast in that section. Going by country, he won the vote in the UK, Germany, Spain, Holland, Italy, Turkey, Russia and Hungary while Ronaldo won the vote in Portugal and Zidane in France.

MasterCard, who are one of the six principal sponsors of UEFA Champions League, conducted this poll, and have been associated with the Champions League for quite some time now.
