Raheem Sterling could be set to play for England in the number ten position against Italy, according to the Mirror.

According to the paper, England manager Roy Hodgson experimented with Raheem Sterling playing the number ten role with Wayne Rooney once again playing out wide.

Sterling is predominantly a winger and that is where he broke through at Liverpool but towards the end of the season Sterling was used centrally by Brendan Rodgers.

Sterling’s opportunity has been boosted by the news that Danny Welbeck might not be able to play against Italy. The Manchester United striker left the training pitch holding his thigh and is now a doubt for the opening game against Italy on Saturday.

The Mirror also report that as it turns out Southampton’s Adam Lallana hasn’t done enough in the warm-up matches to warrant inclusion and if Welbeck is fit then both he and Sterling will play with Lallana dropped.

There will be one final training session on Wednesday before the England team fly to Manaus on Thursday.

Only Ross Barkley (697) had a higher performance score than Raheem Sterling (661) of all players in the Premier League aged 20 or under.
