Liverpool have completed the signing of Charlton Athletic defender Joe Gomez on a five-year deal. The Merseyside club paid a fee of £3.5m for his signature and Gomez completed his medical on Friday.

The England U-19 player will join the Premier League club for their pre-season, but the 18-year-old is expected to be sent out on loan for the upcoming season. It is believed that Championship club Derby County are interested in his services and would like to take him on loan.

"It's a dream come true. It's a bit surreal and it hasn't really hit me yet. But I'm buzzing and just excited to get started," said Gomez. "The club has got great history and it's a great club, and one that I've always been following from when I was young.”

"Here was somewhere I wanted to go and get better and learn, and play good football. It was an easy decision," he said.

Gomez was in the England U-17 team which won the European Championship in 2014. The youngster who appeared 24 times for the Championship side is Liverpool’s fourth signing after James Milner (Manchester City), Danny Ings (Burnley), and Adam Bogdan (Bolton).
