Liverpool’s Ultimatum To Iago Aspas: accept substitute role or find another club

Iago Aspas
Iago Aspas has rarely been used by Brendan Rodgers since his move last summer

According to the Sunday Times, Liverpool have told Iago Aspas to accept a bench role at Anfield or pursue a move elsewhere.

Should the former Celta Viga forward opt for the latter, then Liverpool will look to recoup the full £7.2 million they paid for the Spaniard in 2013.

The 26-year-old made a meagre five Premier League starts last term, as opposed to the 34 starts he was afforded in La Liga the season before.

That tally doesn’t look set to improve next season either, with Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge firmly cemented as the first-choice strike partnership under Brendan Rodgers. Even Rickie Lambert The Reds’ latest acquisition after they agreed a £4.2 milllion with Southampton looks set to get the nod over the diminutive forward.

Having only played one full season in the top flight of a European league before he joined Liverpool (Celta Vigo were promoted to La Liga in 2012 and finished 17th in the subsequent campaign), Aspas may well see a bit-part role in a Premier League-challenging outfit as an agreeable compromise.
