The miracle man

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has claimed that it would take a miracle for his team to win the Premier League after the 1-1 draw against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

Manchester United on 13th pace and with just one point got off to their worst start in the Premier League era since the inaugural season in 1992-93 where they had lost both the opening games. However, they went on to win the league that season.

Van Gaal claimed that whilst it will take something miraculous it is not impossible.

“I think it would be a miracle but it is also possible,” he said. “It is always possible but it shall be very difficult.

“When I got to Bayern Munich the selection was not stable. What we did was a miracle.

“Now, this selection here was not in balance. There are five No.9s, six No.10s and so on. And we don’t have defenders.”

Job security

He also stressed on the fact that his job security ensures he will get sufficient time to embed his philosophy into the players many of whom might still leave the club with less than a week remaining in the transfer window.

Speaking at a post match conference, the 63-year-old reminded everyone about the time it takes to adjust to his methods.

“I have discussed everything, long discussions where I have shown myself as I am always open. That is why we discussed three years for my contract, not one year.

“And what are the consequences when you are hiring me? I have told them.

“And my experience in my former clubs was always that the start was difficult. I know I give a lot of information and I know that I load the brain a lot and the players have to adapt to that situation. That is not so easy.

“Then you can say to me, maybe a little less information. But that is not possible because we have to change the way of playing football and the way of transferring my methods.

“That is not only in team meetings, that is also on the pitch every day and when I give an exercise it is always with a tactical purpose. So they have to think a lot.

“When I ask the players for their opinions, they are saying that it is different to what they are used to”

On Di Maria

When asked about the imminent signing of Real Madrid’s high flying winger Angel Di Maria at a post match interview, he played it safe choosing not to discuss the move.

“I cannot say anything about transfers, you have to understand that.”

“When a transfer has been finished then we can say something. But now you have to wait and see. When the moment is there, Manchester United shall announce it.

“I also like [Lionel] Messi and [Arturo] Vidal also. There are a lot of players in this world that I like, but they can’t always come to Manchester United.”
