Louis van Gaal hoping for Cristiano Ronaldo's Old Trafford return

Louis Van Gaal would love to work with Cristiano Ronaldo

One thing that any Manchester United fan would love to see, besides an even larger trophy cabinet, is the club’s prodigal son, Cristiano Ronaldo, back in the famous red shirt. And manager Louis Van Gaal would be more than happy to welcome Ronaldo to his old stomping ground, according to the BBC.

The 30-year-old scored a mammoth 118 goals in 292 appearances for Manchester United, before moving to Real Madrid for a world record £80 million. It now appears that Ronaldo is indeed on Van Gaal’s radar, as he looks to add more attacking players to his squad.

"We are looking at all players, not just Ronaldo. But these players are mostly ungettable," said the Dutchman "With Ronaldo, let's wait and hope."

The Portuguese sensation is held in the highest regard amongst the Old Trafford faithful, and is likely to gladly accept a return to the club which helped make him a world beater. In turn, Ronaldo’s enormous contributions helped United win numerous trophies including three Premier League titles, one FA Cup, two League Cups and one Champions League title in the 2007-2008 season, which was the same season that saw him score a record 42 goals.

His performances in the 2007-2008 season for Manchester United also saw him lift his first of three Ballon D’Or awards. Things seemed extremely rosy in his first season with Madrid, with Ronaldo scoring 33 goals, but it got rocky from there onwards, with the forward often attracting criticism for various reasons.

Just yesterday Ronaldo was jeered by his own fans for his lackluster performance in the heavy defeat against Barcelona, while the Madrid faithful afforded a standing ovation to Barca playmaker Andres Iniesta for his magical display.

Such jeers would never be directed at Ronaldo from the Old Trafford faithful, who even gave him a glowing reception on his return to Old Trafford as a Madrid player three years ago and even applauded him off the pitch, despite him scoring against them and eliminating them from the competition. Such is the regard they have for their former number 7.

The three time Ballon D’Or winner is also reportedly unhappy at Real Madrid, making him ripe for the picking. Needless to say the price that will entice Madrid to part with him will be nothing short of astronomical. But if his recent refusal to commit anything to Real Madrid is any indication, then a move to England could be on the cards.
