Louis van Gaal says a German should win the Ballon d’Or

Current Manchester United manager, Louis van Gaal, hopes that a German player wins the FIFA Ballon d’Or this year. The Dutchman insists that neither Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi should win the coveted prize and it should be a German who lifts the trophy for the best player in 2014.

Despite getting beaten by the Lionel Messi-led Argentina in the semis of the FIFA World Cup, van Gaal feels that the best player of the year should be from the World champions. He says, “You always have to win something and the best thing to win is the World Championship. I hope it shall be a German player because they deserve it.” He also praised the quality of football in the Bundesliga.

The ex-Netherlands manager has also been nominated for the coach of the year category, but, was surprised at the nomination citing his club’s poor form as the reason, "It's unbelievable when you see the results of Manchester United -- it's unbelievable."
