Luis Suarez says he left Liverpool to challenge for the UEFA Champions League title

Luis Suarez has said that he left Liverpool in order to challenge for Champions League

According to new reports, the English media was not the only reason for Luis Suarez to leave Liverpool as the Uruguayan has said that he left Liverpool last summer to join a club that would enable him to challenge for the Champions League.

In the three and a half seasons Suarez spent at Liverpool, he missed out on the league title last year, and the only trophy to his name was the League Cup from 2012.

The 28-year old has an opportunity to win a treble in his first season at Barcelona, after his £65 million move from Liverpool. Barcelona are currently on top of the La Liga table, have reached the Copa del Rey Final and are in the last eight of the Champions League.

“The clubs I played for before didn’t have a chance to win Champions League”

In an interview with UEFA’s Champions Matchday magazine, when he was asked if the chance to win the Champions League had played any part in his move away from Liverpool, he responded saying he wanted to play in a club that was capable of winning big trophies.

"Of course," he said. "Barcelona are always a candidate to win the Champions League. That's a plus here, as the clubs I've played for before didn't really have the chance to win big trophies -- maybe a domestic league or cup."

Suarez, who had a poor start during the first half of the season, has finally found his feet at Barcelona. Although he has not been able to replicate his form from Liverpool, he has scored 16 goals in 32 games across all competitions for Barcelona. He said that was enjoying his game at Barcelona, and is ready to claim silverware at the end of the season.

"Playing in a team like this, where all the players want to win every match and everything, that is a sign that it's all about silverware -- whether it's the Champions League, the Liga or whichever trophy's available," he said. "We have a chance of making the [Champions League] final."
