Why Luis Suarez’s new contract means nothing

However you view him, there’s no denying in that Luis Suarez is, at the moment, in the top ten players in the world; if not the top five. Despite all of their mega history and status as a club, Liverpool aren’t what they were and to have a player of that caliber tied down to to long-term contract is good going. But is it actually as good for Liverpool as everyone is making it out to be?

Suarez, as a human being, must be grateful for the support he’s received from the Liverpool fans. I mean, if people still practically worshiped you after racially abusing someone on the field, cheating, biting a player and saying you wanted to move to a fellow English club then you must stop to think. The South American clearly respects them and that could be a reason as to why he signed the contract. Despite this, Suarez is in a win-win position here.

In football, a contract means nothing and it’s just a piece of paper. The only time contracts really matter is when they are about to expire and clubs are scared that they could lose a player for nothing.

The only thing Suarez’s new contract guarantees Liverpool is that they now have to pay more money from the start of next season to a guy who also had signed a new contract in August 2012. The Reds will reportedly pay him £10 million a season, or £200,000 a week. He was already under contract till the summer of 2016 and now he until 2018, so to be honest it’s just a contract extension.

It doesn’t at all mean, the Uruguayan will stay at the club for another four years. He almost forced a move 12 months after signing a new deal last year and who’s to say he won’t be doing it again. If Liverpool fail to get into the top four this season, then he’s free to go and there’s no doubt that the giants of European football will be after his signature.

If he does lead Liverpool into the Champions League, then Suarez will probably still be off. The attraction of Champions League football will bring huge names to the club, with or without Suarez. Could Liverpool turn down a bid that would be in the region of £50 million plus from a club like Real Madrid, Barcelona or even Bayern Munich?

These combined with the fact that he is now Liverpool’s top earner it’s definitely a ploy from Suarez to get out of Merseyside in the summer and still keep the fans and his bank happy.
