Manchester United 0-0 West Ham United: Player Ratings

United had 21 shots in the match but only 1 on target

Manchester United welcomed West Ham at Old Trafford in a match they were expected to win. The match was played at a fairly high tempo, which perhaps contributed to both sides squandering a lot of chances, which meant the game ended 0-0.

Manchester United

David De Gea (6/10)

The Spaniard made a good save in the first half but later did let the ball slip out of his hands which led to West Ham hitting the post. His distribution was good as well.

Matteo Darmian (5.5/10)

The Italian started at left back and was not good enough defensively but did alright going forward, contributing a few crosses while dovetailing well with Lingard.

Daley Blind (5.5/10)

Normally a good passer, Blind was not good with his distribution, giving the ball away quite a lot. Blind did not do much defensively as well.

Chris Smalling (6/10)

The centre-back had an average outing and was lucky to manage a clean-sheet as West Ham struck the post twice.

Paddy McNair (5.5/10)

The defender who started the match at right-back misplaced a couple of crosses and tried a couple of long range shots as well. One of his crosses found Fellaini, but the Belgian headed just wide. He was substituted after the first half for debutant Guillermo Varela.

Morgan Schneiderlin (5/10)

The French midfielder’s match was cut short as he was substituted in the 44th minute by Michael Carrick after supposedly injuring his hamstring.

Bastian Schweinsteiger (5.5/10)

The German looked decent and was quite physically involved in the match. However, he did not manage to create enough chances and was subsequently substituted by Memphis in the 73rd minute in a quest to inject pace into the team.

Jesse Lingard (6/10)

The United graduate was heavily involved in the match on the left wing, he connected well with Darmian, but unfortunately could not come up with an end product.

Marouane Fellaini (6/10)

The towering Belgian had three to four good chances in the match but failed to convert all of them. He was lucky to escape a card after he stepped on Zarate’s foot but with the referee not noticing the incident, could be in line for a suspension.

Juan Mata (7/10)

The diminutive Spaniard was precise with his passing and build-up play and was nearly perfect barring a right-footed shot which narrowly went wide of the goal in the second half.

Anthony Martial (7/10)

The birthday boy was a constant threat to the Hammers defence, albeit mainly in the second half. Although one of his better shots came in the first half when his sumptuous volley was blocked by Reid.

Substitutes:

Michael Carrick (6/10)

Introduced in the first half, the English international was precise with his passing but was not able to help the team to a goal.

Guillermo Varela (5.5/10)

The youngster played his first match in the Premier League and concentrated mainly on staying back rather than going forward.

Memphis (6.5/10)

The Dutch winger breathed life into United attacks after he came on late in the match but the team failed to score a goal.

West Ham United

Adrian (6/10)

The West Ham shot-stopper made a brilliant save to deny Fellaini early in the second half.

James Tomkins (6.5/10)

Tomkins was not up to the mark as a number of United attacks started from the left but was good enough when going forward.

Winston Reid (7.5/10)

The centre-back saw his header crash the post in the first half, and was a vital cog in the Hammers defence.

Angelo Ogbonna (6.5/10)

He paired well with Reid to maintain the defensive organisation and kept the United attacks at bay.

Aaron Creswell (6.5/10)

The fullback was heavily involved on the left, and along with Zarate constructed some big chances for West Ham. He was defensively sound enough as well.

Alex Song (6/10)

The ex-Barcelona defensive midfielder closed down the United midfield well and sprayed some good passes around as well. He was substituted by Pedro Obiang in the 78th minute.

Victor Moses (5/10)

The ex-Chelsea winger started brightly and had a one on one chance against De Gea, but the Spaniard saved the shot. He was substituted in the 37th minute by Michail Antonio after a clash of knees with Schweinsteiger.

Mark Noble (6.5/10)

The Hammers skipper slipped behind to help his defenders and played a brilliant through ball to Moses but De Gea saved the resulting shot.

Cheikhou Kouyate (6/10)

Kouyate was forced to fall back during the majority of the match and did well going forward as well.

Mauro Zarate (7/10)

The left winger was at his brilliant best, and arguably the best Hammers player on the pitch after Reid. He was taken off in the 87th minute for Carl Jenkinson.

Andy Carroll (5.5/10)

The ex-Liverpool striker did not do much in the match but one of his passes left Zarate open in front of goal only for the Argentine to shoot the ball wide.

Substitutes:

Michail Antonio (6/10)

Brought on early for Moses, Antonio had a decent outing at the Old Trafford and his pace created some problems for Darmian.

Pedro Obiang (5/10)

Came on in the 78th minute for Song, and did decent to hold on to a nil-nil draw.

Carl Jenkinson (N/A)

Came on for Zarate in the 87th minute.
