Manchester United legend Paul Scholes calls Mourinho scarf seller a 'clown'

The infamous Jose Mourinho scarf outside Old Trafford last night

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has given a stinging response to the man who was selling Jose Mourinho scarves outside Old Trafford ahead of their clash against Chelsea. The new Mourinho knitwear included the Special One's face and name alongside the Manchester United club badge, with a majority of the fans opting to buy the scarf and make their intentions clear. Mourinho has been linked with the job ever since he was sacked by Chelsea.

Paul Scholes comments on the scarf seller

Unsurprisingly, Scholes isn’t a fan of the person who created the already infamous Mourinho themed Manchester United scarves on sale outside Old Trafford. Scholes, who was working for BT Sport alongside Rio Ferdinand and Steven Gerrard, upon seeing the scarf allegedly said, "I'm not sure what that clown is doing."

United have endured a torrid time under the guidance of Louis van Gaal and haven't won in their last eight outings in all competitions. But Scholes believes that there are a lot of supporters and well wishers like him who are backing the manager to turn things around soon. Manchester United’s impressive performance against Chelsea in the 0-0 draw must have surely added some confidence to the team.

Mourinho touted to replace Van Gaal by fans

Mourinho, of course, has been heavily linked with the top job at Old Trafford following Louis van Gaal's poor run in the dugout. The fans were also seen carrying posters that suggested Mourinho’s appointment and Van Gaal’s departure from the club. However, Jorge Mendes had earlier confirmed that an offer has not yet been made by any club to convince Mourinho.

Mendes told Sky Sport Italia: “Mourinho is now in Brazil. Let's see what will happen when he returns. Jose has to feel comfortable because he is the No 1 in the world”. He added: "Will we see him back in Italy? For now, I am not going to speak about Spain nor England nor Italy. I repeat, he is No.1 and now he is on holiday.”

The Red Devils, despite failing to secure all three points against a struggling Chelsea, produced a strong performance and were extremely unlucky not to find the back of the net on a number of occasions throughout the game. Perhaps Van Gaal could yet change the dynamic of his team over the coming weeks and months but the very existence of the Mourinho scarves says a lot about the club's current plight.
