Manchester United legends Scholes and Ferdinand slam their former club's recent performace

Scholes and Ferdinand during their time at Manchester United

Legendary Manchester United players Paul Scholes and RIo Ferdinand provided some scathing reviews about their former team’s 3-2 loss against Wolfsburg in the Champions League which eventually saw them eliminated from the competition – reports ESPN FC.

Scholes and Ferdinand, who are both pundits for BT Sport, minced no words regarding their former team’s performance.

"United just look like an average team, really, and with an average team you get average performances," said Scholes.

When asked if United were facing a crisis, Scholes replied: "Yeah, probably."

Former United defender Rio Ferdinand shared similar sentiments with his one time teammate and said: "It's embarrassing. I was in a squad that went into the Europa League [in 2011] and it's an embarrassment.

"You don't want to come out of your house, you don't want to walk around Manchester, you're looking at people looking at you and thinking, 'Ah, you're not good enough,' questioning you as an individual and as part of a team that didn't get through the group stages that you should have, on paper."

The duo were lent support by another former teammate of theirs in the form of Michael Owen who said: "You look at the players now -- are there any world-class players in there? David De Gea definitely, and then you could probably argue one or two more ... Wayne Rooney if he's on form, but he hasn't been on form for a while now.

"So, no, they're quite a way off at the moment and that is the disappointing thing having spent so much money. You'd expect for that kind of money at least four or five world-class players in the squad."

The match against Wolfsburg saw United play with a makeshift defence, which was further complicated by the additions of Nick Powell, Guillermo Varela and Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, later in the game.

United stood no chance against the proficient runs of Julian Draxler, who succeded in completely bamboozling the Old Trafford outfit’s defence, which allowed his teammates to score.

United equalized through Anthony Martial and an own goal by Josuha Guilavogui , but the final nail in their coffin was hammered home by Wolfsburg defender Naldo – who headed the ball past De Gea, sending his team into the next round of the Champions League.

Despite the loss, the Mancheter United board is still backing Van Gaal, according to the Press Association, with the Dutchman insisting that he knows what he’s doing with the team.
