Scholes has been critical of United’s performance this season

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes denied suggestions that he is trying to get Louis Van Gaal sacked. The former English midfielder has been very upset with his old team’s performances this season criticizing Louis Van Gaal and the players on several occasions throughout the season.

Scholes was particularly disappointed with United’s performance against Liverpool last Thursday when David De Gea was man of the match calling it an ‘absoulte disaster’. But because of his consistent criticism, many have accused him of undermining the manager.

But Scholes has hit back at his doubters. According to an interview in United We Stand Fanzine he said, “What a load of b****s. What I've always done is nothing more than say what I think I've seen on a football pitch, whether that's been good or bad..”

The 41-year-old said the media was only focusing on the negative comments he has on Van Gaal and not telling the full story. “The thing with Van Gaal is that everything he has read, and everything I say that gets printed, is only the negative stuff.”

He also cited an example of when he was complimentary of the team as well as the manager saying,”There are times when I have tried to be positive. The best example I can think of was PSV away when, we got beaten and didn't play great, but I felt I could see something happening in the United way. By that, I mean we had two wingers in.”

Scholes stated that his negativity has been blown slightly out of proportion and he only has a problem with the style of play, “But when only my negative comments are picked on, it looks worse than it actually is. It's not the regime I've had a go at -- I've criticised the style of play.”

United face uphill task against Liverpool

Liverpool defeated United in the first leg of their Europa League tie by a scoreline of 2-0 which also included several outstanding saves from De Gea. The team played a weekend FA Cup clash against West Ham United and managed to secure a draw thanks a late Martial goal.

Scholes felt it was a significant result but felt the Hammers will have the edge in the replay. Speaking to BT Sport he said “I think it was important they got some kind of result [against West Ham], and they did that with a draw. I still have to make West Ham slight favourites going to their place.”

The Red Devils host Liverpool onThursday night in the return leg and will be hoping to overturn the deficit but they will have to put in a better performance than the one they displayed at Anfield to have realistic hopes of progressing to the next round.
