Manchester United would be unwise to appoint Louis van Gaal as their manager

Manchester United finally decided that enough was enough and parted ways with their under-performing manager David Moyes yesterday morning. The Old Trafford club lost 15 games under Moyes, the most recent being the 2-0 defeat at the hands of his former club Everton. Ryan Giggs has been announced as the interim-manager for the remaining four games of the season but is not expected to take over the reins of the club just yet. Manchester United have set their sights on a number of world class coaches and legendary Dutch boss Louis van Gaal has emerged as the front runner for the job.

He is currently the head coach of the Netherlands national team but will step down from his post after this year’s World Cup. The Dutchman was set to take over as United’s manager in 2002 when Ferguson stated that he was retiring but the deal fell through after the Scot went back on his decision. The 62-year-old is known for his unorthodox methods but has had plenty of success with teams like Ajax, Barcelona and Bayern where he won numerous trophies. There is no doubt about van Gaal’s credentials but I sincerely hope he doesn’t come to Manchester United.

The first thing that makes van Gaal’s appointment a bad idea is his age. The Dutchman will be 63 in August and may last only for a few years. Manchester United desperately needs to be rebuilt before they start winning things and that will surely take time. United need a younger manager who can rebuild a team and then go on to build a legacy that will last for years.

Jurgen Klopp who is without doubt the best young manager in the world right now would be ideal for United as he puts his faith in youth, is shrewd in the transfer market and makes his team play exciting football but his appointment is unlikely as he stated that he has his heart set on staying at Borussia Dortmund. Diego Simeone who is another up and coming young manager has also stated that he wishes to remain with Atletico Madrid for a few more years.

Another reason why the United board shouldn’t consider van Gaal is his massive ego along with his shocking antics. The Dutchman is known to be extremely hard to work with and has had fall outs with numerous players. The very reason why prolific striker Luca Toni left Bayern Munich was due to differences with van Gaal.

The manager’s antics will also bring negativity to the club. van Gaal took off his trousers in front of the entire Bayern Munich squad who thought that he wanted to show them that he “had the b*lls” to drop any player he desired, whereas all van Gaal wanted to say was the substitutions made where not to satisfy his ego, but for the team. Mis-communication of this sort is not at all good for any club, let alone a club in transition, and moreover, which stable person does this?

Manchester United legend Sir Bobby Charlton once said that Jose Mourinho, who is also known for his antics, would not fit the bill of a Manchester United manager as he often attracts negative attention. The legendary forward stated that Mourinho is a brilliant tactician but his unruly behaviour (eg: the Tito Vilanova poke) would be bad for Manchester United, whose traditions set them apart from other clubs. The same can be said about van Gaal who will possibly bring more burdens than blessings.

I totally agree with what Charlton said. Klopp and Simeone are also successful managers but get things done with little or no controversy.

The United board should not forget that van Gaal will be Netherlands coach until July which is when the World Cup ends. The reason why Manchester United had a disastrous transfer window last year is because David Moyes was announced as manager on the 1st of July – two long months after the window opened.

The World Cup ends on the 13th on July so van Gaal can only assume managerial duties at the end of that month which will mean that three whole months will go without any new signings.

All in all it can be safely said that van Gaal’s appointment would create more problems at Manchester United than it would solve.

One can only hope that either Diego Simone or Jurgen Klopp has a change of heart and decides to join Manchester United.
