Memphis Depay warned by Louis van Gaal to not emulate Angel di Maria

Louis van Gaal warns Memphis Depay to not follow Angel Di Maria’s footsteps

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has warned Memphis Depay, that he must not replicate his predecessor Angel di Maria’s performance at Manchester United, according to Sky Sports. The youngster who moved to the Premier League this season from PSV Eindhoven in a £25-million switch, was dropped to the bench in the match against Everton where the men from Old Trafford won 3-0. Since his move, the Dutchman has been struggling to cope with English football and has not been able to shine as he did in PSV last season where he won the Eredivisie.

It is understood that Louis van Gaal’s assistant manager Ryan Giggs has given the youngster a pep talk about his attitude, while the gaffer himself “did not want to discuss” the 21-year-old’s behaviour.

"Ryan has already given advice to him but the player is responsible for his own deeds," he said. "You have to give respect to your team philosophy."

Depay made headlines when he helped Netherlands finish third in the World Cup, and it was presumed he would be a success at Old Trafford as he has already worked with Van Gaal and knows about the former Barcelona manager’s philosophy.

Angel Di Maria and Falcao could not adapt to the team philosophy

Van Gaal added: "We have seen that some players cannot adapt to the team philosophy. You cannot know in advance before you buy them. You have to wait and see. That happened with Angel Di Maria and [Radamel] Falcao."

Angel Di Maria was bought from Real Madrid for a record-breaking fee £59.7-million at the beginning of the 2014/15 season and was sold to Paris Saint-Germain just a season later after falling out of favour with Van Gaal.

Falcao was also another player from whom a lot was expected but similar to Di Maria, the South American was let go as he was unable to adapt to the Dutchman’s Philosophy.

When the 64-year-old was asked what Depay had to do to get back in form, he said: "I only discuss that with Memphis, not with you.

"Do I still believe in him? Of course. The problem with young players is they are not consistent. That you have to learn. We have to give him time."
