Memphis Depay opens up about his struggles with Manchester United in the Premier League

Memphis is taking his time to get used to the intensity of EPL

Manchester United winger Memphis Depay has recently joined up with the Dutch national side as they make one last push in their attempt to qualify for the Euros next summer.

The Dutch are currently fourth in their group and essentially, they must win both of their last two qualifying matches against Kazakhstan and the Czech Republic if they are to have any chance of qualifying. First up is the qualifier against Kazakhstan on Saturday.

In an interview to De Telegraf, Memphis discussed everything from Netherland’s chance to qualify for the Euros, to his initial struggles in the English Premier League.

He explained exactly why he has not been able to reproduce the form, which made Manchester United pay £25m for his services in the summer. Memphis was the highest goal scorer with 22 goals in the Dutch Eredivisie last season, he scored another 6 goals in Europe which improves his tally to 28. His free-kick prowess is also talked about a lot. The reason is that he scored from 7 free kicks last season. With a conversion rate of 21.21, according to Squawka.

Memphis said, “There are a lot of games in Manchester. There are very few rest days and on training days you are mainly concerned with recovering. It’s heavy, two games a week, always at a high level, and my body has to get used to that.”

Though, he stressed on the fact that, eventually he will get used to the rhythm and physicality of English football. “I try to manage my career in steps, and I am still in the middle. I think this was the right step and I am happy in Manchester... I’m still developing.”

Louis Van Gaal on how Memphis will adapt to EPL:

LVG told the media last month, “He has played every game until now, but it's not so easy. It's a high rhythm in the Premier League but he has to adapt to that high rhythm and he shall improve I think. I have to be patient for Memphis, and the fans do also.”

All the Manchester United fans must be hoping that Memphis can replicate his Champions League form in the Premier League as well. He has scored three goals in four European appearances for United.

Given the ability that the Dutch star possesses, he can only improve from where he is now.
