The UEFA President Michel Platini has stated that the decision to hand Qatar as the host of 2022 World cup should be reconsidered if it is found that FIFA officials were influenced to vote for the nation.

He becomes the most senor official to state that the World Cup vote should be rerun if it is proved that the officials were bribed to vote for Qatar.

Platini said, “I think it was the right choice (to award Qatar the World Cup) for FIFA and football worldwide. But if corruption is proved, there will need to be a new vote and sanctions.”

Platini had earlier reveled that he voted for Qatar in the ballot held in 2010 and had also supported the proposal to move the tournament to winter. He is believed to be eyeing the post of FIFA president next year, which could displace the current President Sepp Blatter. Blatter has come under severe criticism over his recent remarks, admitting that the decision to hand Qatar the World Cup was a mistake.

FIFA’s decision to hold the World Cup in Qatar has turned into one of the most controversial decisions in recent times due to the difficulties of holding the tournament in a country where the temperature can reach 50 degrees Celsius in summer. This has lead to suggestions of moving the World Cup to winter, which will have serious consequences for leagues and broadcasters.
