Neymar says it was difficult for Barcelona to win with Camp Nou fans whistling at players

Neymar felt the team was suffering due to the fans reaction

Barcelona’s winger Neymar said the unhappy fans at the Camp Nou made it harder for the team to make a comeback against Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League fixture on Tuesday, according to ESPN. Although the team went on to win the game in the final minutes, courtesy of Sergi Roberto and Luis Suarez, the men from Germany were pressing the home team right from kick-off.

It was evident that Barcelona were unable to cope without the presence of their star forward Lionel Messi, but during the course of the game they were handed a bigger blow when Andres Iniesta had to be taken off due to an injury.

The crowd at Camp Nou were seen whistling at their own players, as the German team’s superiority was evident. While defender Jeremy Mathieu and goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen were the ones who received most of the hate, even Sergio Busquets – who is currently one of Barcelona’s most experienced players – didn’t get away.

Neymar, who was also having a bad day, told reporters that the crowd’s reaction made it harder for the team to perform, and that it was not at all supportive to the Barcelona players.

"It is difficult when the fans are not with you, but we know they want more from us," said the Brazilian.

"We will try and do what we can. I am very happy with the win. We suffered, suffered a lot to win the game, but the important thing was to win and we did everything to score the goals and in the end we won."

Barcelona need character more than a saviour: Suarez

Suarez, who saved the Blaugrana twice in one week had a different opinion of the event. While the Catalan team is known to be overly reliant on Messi in their recent past, the Uruguayan told Spanish TV that the team needed character rather than a saviour.

"Barca does not need a saviour, we need character and the team deserves praise for coming back against Leverkusen," said the Barcelona striker. "Scoring a goal makes you even happier, but above all the team's won.”

"There are also always extra demands when someone like Messi is not there. Nobody is going to want to imitate Leo. Now the forwards who are there, Neymar, Sandro, Munir and myself, we must try and make sure we take the chances we get."

The 28-year old also added that Messi needs the support of the fans and the players during his recovery so that he can make a smooth return.

"Leo is mentally strong," the former Liverpool player said. "He knows the injury was nothing to do with him. Although he is strong, we must help to lift him so that he returns to make the supporters happy."

The former Liverpool player scored the winning goal for Barcelona twice in one week, and both were assisted by La Masia graduate Munir.

Luis Enrique though was disappointed with the reaction from the home crowd and said that the fans should have more faith in the team that won the treble last season.
