No legal action available for Qatar if FIFA strips its rights to host the 2022 World Cup

Qatar will not be able to impose a legal challenge on FIFA if it would be stripped of its rights to stage the 2022 World Cup.

Of late, there has been various corruption allegations against Qatar surrounding the bid process. Besides, issues were also raised about the temperatures during summer in Qatar as to whether players will be able to adapt to the scorching heat of middle-east. Due to these reasons, it is suspected that FIFA, during its annual congress to be held in Sao Paulo on June 11, will strip Qatar of its rights to hold the tournament and will order for a revote.

Meanwhile, Qatar has been denying all the corruption allegations and desperately wants to retain its rights to host the tournament as they have already allocated huge funds for the preparation. Few days ago, Qatar officials were considering to take legal action against FIFA if soccer’s world governing body goes for a revote.

But now, all the hopes of Qatar have been shattered as the legal officer of one of the bidding nations pointed out that all the nations gave away their rights to take any form of legal action against FIFA when the original tender for the tournament was made in 2010. The official said, “Should Fifa decide to have a revote, Qatar cannot take FIFA to a Swiss court. All bidding countries knew they were giving up their legal rights when bidding for the World Cup. But so keen are countries to get the World Cup, they happily agreed to do so.”

Therefore, FIFA is all set to strip off the tournament from Qatar citing improper code of conduct without any legal consequences from the Gulf nation. In the same annual congress to be held on June 11, it is expected that Sepp Blatter will be announcing that he would serve a fifth-term as the President of FIFA.
