Paul Scholes thinks Manchester United could disappear like Liverpool in the 1990s

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes says that he is genuinely scared that Manchester United could “go into the wilderness” just like Liverpool did two decades ago.

He said that although the club won its 20th League title 15 months ago, and the fact that it is commercially successful coupled with the Premier League’s highest matchday revenue thanks to the biggest stadium in the league, the club is suffering on the pitch.

“I'm sick of having to criticise the club to which I gave my life as a player,” Scholes wrote in the Independent.

“But United need to arrest their decline.”

He also said that this sort of mediocrity after winning so many trophies under Sir Alex Ferguson was ‘unthinkable’.

Manchester United need five players

Scholes also mentioned that the Red Devils need five players – and not just players with the potential to succeed.

He said: “What do United need? Five players. Not five players with potential. Five experienced players... for now.”

“Five proper players who can hit the ground running and turn around a situation that looks desperate.”

His choice of players included four from Real Madrid – Xabi Alonso, Sami Khedira, Raphaël Varane and Angel Di Maria, and Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels.

I wanted club to sign both Kroos and Fabregas

He also mentioned that at the end of last season, he was asked for his opinion on who the club should sign in the summer – Toni Kroos or Cesc Fabregas.

“I thought there was only one response to that difficult choice between two great players.” he wrote

“I said United should sign them both.”
