Carrick might stay after all

Michael Carrick was going to leave at the end of this season after his contract with the club was set to run out in the summer But according to ESPNFC the veteran is set to be offered a new contract to keep him at the club.

If Louis Van Gaal had stayed then it would have been likely that the Englishman played his last match in a red shirt but with the announcement of Jose Mourinho as the next manager imminent, the player might get to continue with the club with the Portuguese agreeing to keep him on.

A lot of clubs both in England and abroad were monitoring his situation in case United were not going extend his contract. Arsenal were reported to be one of the clubs interested in signing the player with Wenger an admirer of the midfielder.

Carrick didn’t have the best of seasons in 2015/16. It was a season of underachievement for the whole team as United only managed a 5th place finish in the table missing out on the top four on goal difference.

For a while, it was very tight between the two Manchester clubs but in the end, City managed to edge out their rivals by claiming the point they needed on the final day of the season against Swansea.

FA Cup victory not enough to save Van Gaal

Carrick didn’t earn a regular spot in the first XI, due to injury and bad form. Van Gaal used to regularly rotate his midfield as Morgan Schneiderlin, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Marouane Fellaini and Carrick played alternatively,

The Dutchman failed to find a steady combination in the centre of the park which affected United’s gameplay. The Red Devils were the lowest scorers among the top 8 clubs this season but did have a good defence.

Van Gaal did manage to lift the club’s first FA Cup trophy in 12 years as they managed to defeat Crystal Palace in the final after extra time. But that wasn’t enough to keep him in charge and Ed Woodward ended his tenure early.

Jose Mourinho is now the man who is reported to take over with club ready to make the announcement very soon. Fans will be divided on their opinion of the manager. The board were also initially hesitant to hire Mourinho because they had doubts over his touchline behavior and his style of play.

One thing is certain Mourinho will guarantee success given his impressive track record at all his previous clubs.
