Van Gaal might end up staying at Manchester United next summer

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand feels that Manchester United’s recent performances might save the veteran Dutch manager from facing the sack this season. There have been widespread rumours that Jose Mourinho might become the new manager but Ferdinand feels otherwise.

Ferdinand speaking to TalkSport said:

“If he [Van Gaal] wins the FA Cup and United finish in the Champions League [qualification places] he could sit there and say that is progression."

United made it to the finals of the FA Cup thanks to a dramatic late winner from Martial. They are also hopeful of making it to the top 4 in the Premier League as they are only five points adrift with a game in hand.

Van Gaal has been accused of playing boring football, but Ferdinand feels recent signs have been promising.

Ferdinand added: "Speaking to people at Manchester in and around the ground and supporters around the country, they are not playing the type of football they are accustomed to seeing at Manchester United. They want to see football that is respectful of their history of the club. It has been a lot of sideways, sideways football.

"But I watched the game at the weekend [against Everton] and, if that is a sign of things to come, then Louis van Gaal has got a great argument to put forward.

"This season has been a bit doom and gloom for Manchester United with the way they have played, but Louis van Gaal's legacy -- if he is going to have one when he leaves -- is the introduction of all these young boys, with [Marcus] Rashford leading the charge."

The last few weeks of this season are very crucial for Manchester United as they will look to win the FA Cup and secure a place in the top 4.

Rio Ferdinand urges Manchester United to make life difficult for Leicester City

Leicester are at the top of the EPL table with 76 points from 35 matches, seven points ahead of second-placed Tottenham Hotspur.

A win against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday will see them secure the EPL title. However, the former England international wants Manchester United to prevent Leicester from winning the League at Old Trafford.

"Not at Old Trafford, we're not having that. It's not a nice feeling when a team wins at your ground, but wherever they win it, they deserve it this year," the former central defender told talkSPORT on Wednesday.

Manchester United will have to win the game if they are to have any chance of making it to the top 4.
