Rumour: Manchester United tried to sign Arjen Robben, admits former assistant manager Rene Meulensteen

Former Manchester United assistant manager Rene Meulensteen claimed that they tried to sign Robben

Former Manchester United assistant manager Rene Meulensteen has claimed that new boss Louis van Gaal would “love” to take Netherlands winger Arjen Robben to Old Trafford, admitting that the club previously tried to sign Robben during Sir Alex Ferguson’s period in charge.

Bayern Munich winger Robben has scored three goals for Van Gaal’s Netherlands side during the World Cup, prompting Meulensteen to claim that the new Manchester United manager would love to manage his international charge at club level.

van Gaal has already signed Luke Shaw from Southampton and Ander Herrera from Bilbao, but is still in the market for more players as he looks to rebuild a squad that finished seventh last season.

“I’m sure Van Gaal would love to take Arjen Robben to Manchester United. That’s not a surprise,” Meulensteen told talkSPORT.

The former Fulham boss continued by admitting that Ferguson had contemplated signing Robben for “ few years” during his time at Old Trafford, before the 30-year-old signed for Bayern.

However he does not envisage Robben moving to Old Trafford anytime soon, admitting that the winger is happy at Bayern.

“When I was at Manchester United, we looked at that possibility for a few years, but then he signed for Bayern Munich. He’s been happy ever since and had a lot of success there.”
