Things that are going horribly wrong for Manchester United

Robin van Persie of Manchester United looks on during the Barclays Premier League match between Everton and Manchester United

Having missed the Premier League title last season in the dying minutes of the last game, United were expected to start the new season with a bang. But things have gone horribly wrong for them with the starting match of the new season. After a lot of hype on the transfer of Robin Van Persie from Arsenal, Manchester United were expected to put up a better show with the combination of Van Persie and Wayne Rooney. Most of the experts believed this lethal combination would be deadly against any opposition. But Sir Alex Ferguson had other plans in mind. With Ferdinand, Smalling, Jones and Jonny Evans out with injury, Ferguson had limited options in his defense. Drafting in Carrick in place of Ferdinand and Valencia as a right back sounded horrendous to anyone.

Without a reliable right and center back and bigger names in the midfield Manchester United is going to have a really tough time ahead in the Premier League and tougher time in the Champions League. Time has come to change things around and replace Carrick, Scholes. Scholes has no spark left in him like before and young and talented playmaker is what United needs and not strikers one after another. United already had Rooney, Hernandez and Welbeck, so fans were expecting a big name signing in the midfield. Someone like Xavi, Iniesta, Oezil or even Moutinho would have been an awesome thing for United’s midfield. Now as talks are on for Kaka’s move to United only time can say how much things will improve if this loan movement happens.

Van Persie was a much hyped topic before the season started and everybody expected Sir Alex would draft him straight in the starting eleven and pair him up with Rooney. However he preferred Welbeck who was pretty much useless during his 68 minutes stay on the field. Chicharito on the other hand who vowed to play as an assist and make his team-mates score goals didn’t even get to play.

Nani was a disaster in the opening game and Scholes didn’t have enough fire in him which could have shackled the Toffee’s midfield and defense. The fans have started to believe that Carrick must go as he is not a big name in the midfield anymore. Compared to Xavi, Iniesta, Oezil, Lampard and other top midfielders who are real playmaker for their team, Carrick is nothing compared to them. Team formation, tactics, substitutes are the things which Sir Alex Ferguson has to focus on from now onwards. Before the summer transfer window closes he will have to land up a genuine play-maker and a stout and agile defender.

It’s serious time for Ferguson and the management to tighten the laces and do something fruitful else the Red Devils will have to end up the season without a trophy. He must not leave it too late before things get out of hands and then he realizes that a potential midfielder and defender is what the team required instead of Robin Van Persie for £24million.
