Two explosions were reported this morning from the Donbass Arena, which is home to Ukrainian professional football club, the club has confirmed.

In an official statement released by the Press Office, it was stated: “On 23 August, at 6:00 [8.30 am IST], two powerful explosions occurred at Donbass Arena. As a result of shelling, there are numerous damages of the northwestern facade of the stadium, communications, equipment and detached building of the energy centre, which is located in the northern part of the Donbass Arena park.”

“There are no casualties among the stadium staff.”

Surprisingly, some media representatives had reported that during the ongoing combat operations in Ukraine, the Donbass Arena was bombed two days ago. Yet the stadium authorities failed to take any major precaution against it.

Prior to this incident, six Shakhtar players Douglas Costa, Alex Teixeira, Fred, Ismaily, Dentinho and Facundo Ferreyra had refused to return to Ukraine because of the ongoing political situation in the eastern region of Ukraine. The team was forced to play their home matches in Lviv for the rest of the season.
