The US won 4-3.

The United States of America hosted the German national football team in an international friendly which marked their 100th anniversary at the RFK Memorial Stadium in Washington. In front of a sellout crowd of 47,359, USA won an exciting match 4-3.The weakened German side were without any Bayern Munich player, and had Dortmund’s Sven Bender as well as Miroslav Klose returning to the first eleven. Germany were coming into the game after a 2-4 victory against Ecuador, while USA came into the match off a 2-4 defeat against a talented Belgium ahead of crucial 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in the CONCACAF zone.

USA had the better start as Jozy Altidore gave them a 13th minute lead. Three minutes later, a Benedikt Höwedes back pass could not be stopped by Marc-Andre ter Stegen and allowed the ball to enter as an own goal. The USA were more present, while the weakened German side needed time to settle down and began to play as a unit only towards the end of the first session.

After the break, Germany reduced the deficit through a Heiko Westermann header off a Max Kruse cross in the 52nd minute, but captain Clint Dempsey would scored a brace in the 60th and 64th minute to make it 4-1 for the USA, the second goal being a delightful long-range shot.

It looked like Germany could face a heavy defeat, but the young side came back with two quick goals in the 79th and 81st minute with Max Kruse scoring his first-ever goal for Germany. and then teenager Julian Draxler also got onto the score-sheet. In the end, Germany pushed for the equaliser, but after a long season there was not enough power to get their fourth goal as the USA won the match and could celebrate their 100th anniversary in style.
