Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal has turned up the heat on David De Gea, claiming that the club have offered him “a lot of money” to remain in Manchester.
Having joined from Atletico Madrid in 2011, De Gea has been linked with a return to Madrid, but with neighbours Real Madrid, as a replacement for Iker Casillas.
With his contract due to expire next summer, United may be forced to cash in on the reigning player of the year, a move that will likely disappoint fans as the Spaniard has become a fan favourite at Old Trafford.
Asked about his goalkeeper, Van Gaal stated the ball is in his court and that the decision lays with him:
“It takes a long time now. It can always happen. I am not the boss. I want him to stay. The player is the boss – he can say ‘yes’ or ‘no’.
“He has to sign. We have offered him a lot of money.”
Van Gaal’s comments put the spotlight on De Gea, forcing him to state that essentially he wants to leave United as the Dutchman has essentially stated the club have made concessions to keep him.
It will be interesting to see how this plays out especially with rumours around a move picking up this week and rumours of Tottenham’s Hugo Lloris joining United as De Gea’s replacement surfacing.
