The first World Cup match to feature the vanishing spray was the opening game of the 2014 FIFA World Cup between Brazil and Croatia on 12 June, used by referee Yuichi Nishimura.

The vanishing spray, used with great success in the FIFA World Cup earlier this year in Brazil is set to make its debut in the Spanish League Division 1 and 2 in the 2014-15 season.

The RFEF (Real Federación Española de Fútbol) approved the use of the aerosol spray in its assembly meeting of board directors.

According to LiveScience the foam is “a mixture of butane, isobutane and propane gas; a foaming agent; water; and other chemicals.

"When it leaves the can, the gas depressurizes and expands, creating small, water-covered droplets on the field. The butane mixture later evaporates, leaving only water and surfactant residue behind.”

Used to mark freekick spots and defensive wall lines, it will be instrumental in curbing players who unfairly take freekicks from their preferred spots and defenders who don’t maintain the mandatory 10 yard distance.

The Italian League has also approved its use thus making Spain the second European country to use the canned spray which has been a norm in South America for years
