Bundesliga side VfL Wolfsburg are one of the most ambitious teams in the league, but currently they are bottom of the Bundesliga with only five point from eight matches and on Thursday they fired their coach-cum-sports director Felix Magath to save the season. Wolfsburg are backed by German car maker Volkswagen and they have spend quite a substantial amount of money on the club over the last decade, but they have not been able to get continued success. Under Magath, the club were surprise Bundesliga champions in 2009, but thereafter they haven’t been able to get their act together with successful coaches like Armin Veh and Steve McClaren failing at the club before Magath was brought back in March 2011.

Magath having won the Bundesliga title with Wolfsburg was given all necessary powers by the clubs board and the Volkswagen management with the aim of getting Wolfsburg back into European competition, either the UEFA Europa League or even better into the UEFA Champions League.
But Magath, having spent around 70 Million Euros over the last three transfer periods, was not able to play his magic once more as his tough training methods, player unfriendly communication style and his often switching of formations failed to get the desired results.
In the end, Wolfsburg had no other way out than to sack their manager to try a restart under a new coach. Until then, second team coach, seasoned Lorenz-Günther Köstner will be interim in-charge of the team.
