How many times have we seen players surround the referee if they are unhappy with a decision by the official? The game is forgotten and the entire attention shifts to how the man with the whistle got it wrong and what can be done to correct it.
Players often try to influence the referee by outnumbering him. One referee who was known to be a no-nonsense official and the man who players were afraid of and respected at the same time was Pierluigi Collina. However, with the Italian’s retirement, we are yet to see another commanding referee on the pitch.
In the video below, we see glimpses of Collina in another referee. With the agitated players surrounding him, complaining all they could, the referee maintained his cool and just did something that scared away the players.
He pretended that he would send the players off by taking the red card out of his pocket. The players immediately calmed down and for the ones that didn’t, team officials from the bench came to send them away from the referee to prevent going a man, or more, down.
