Video: Florentino Perez's comments on Luis Suarez come back to haunt him after El Clasico

Florentino Perez Real Madrid

Real Madrid club president Florentino Perez in the middle of the 2013-14 season was filmed by a fan while being asked to “Bring Suarez” to Real Madrid. His response caused quite a storm back when the video first surfaced as he dismissed the fan by telling him Luis Suarez wasn’t a good player.

At the time Suarez was at Liverpool scoring for fun in their push for the Premier League title as they would only stumble at the final moment to fail in their bid. It did not, however, dim the Uruguayan’s talent and contribution by any measure.

In the video, the fan is seen telling Perez to “Bring Suarez” a couple of times. Perez clarifies with him first, saying, “Who Luis Suarez?”. Immediately after he’s clearly heard saying: “Suarez? He is not a very good player.”

While having faced some flak for that video alone, it appeared that the Real Madrid president only made the remark in good humour. Although it would be a cruel joke later on as Barcelona snapped him up despite Suarez serving a ban for biting Giorgio Chiellini during the 2014 World Cup.

Despite missing a sizable portion of that season, he would go on to be a crucial part of the Barcelona team that won the treble. He also has a particularly good record against Los Blancos for the Catalan club, scoring or assisting in all 3 games against them, most recently he struck 2 goals in the 4-0 win at the Bernabeu.

Perez has come under fire recently after the club has won only 1 league trophy under his 7-yer tenure so far. They also won “La Decima” at the end of the 2013-14 season but now after the appointment of Rafael Benitez, for the first time he’s coming under some real pressure.

The fans at the Santiago Bernabeu loudly chanted for the sacking of Perez at the end of the 4-0 humiliation by their rivals at their own stomping ground. There have been murmurs of disapproval before this but the latest calls for his resignation have been a wider response from Madridista.
