Video: Player takes hilarious Scott Sterling-esque penalty

The account ‘futbolsport’ on Instagram posted a video of a player taking a shot at the crossbar and the shot smashes back onto his head and then pings into the goal. This game of human pinball on the pitch barely lasts a second but it’s an incredibly funny moment.

Remember Scott Sterling? Not the Liverpool player, that’s Raheem Sterling. Scott was a goalkeeper in a video that became an internet sensation. The video was a doctored clip of penalty shootouts where the goalkeeper saved everything.

The catch was that he barely did anything but the ball found him and smacked into him, at one point rendering him unable to move and needing to be placed on a chair to defend his goal and still managing to save the shot. All this while the crowd raucously chanted ‘Scott Sterling!’ every time he makes a save!

As grotesque as that sounds, it has some element of hilarity to it and so does this video that seems to be the converse of Sterling’s situation. The player runs towards the ball and seems to take a lofted shot at goal from the penalty spot and this is where the video seems to have been aided by technology as the ball ricochets back off the crossbar hits the post and then ends up hitting the player in the face before bouncing back into the net.

Following the penalty the shot moves to one of the coach celebrating that seems to have been recorded separately. It’s another piece of genius that has come out of a little mix of reality and technology. Neither video seem to be entirely real but it doesn’t take away from the fun that the internet has managed to repeatedly amaze us with!
