Wayne Rooney has won his battle to overcome a toe injury and has been passed fully fit to play against former club Everton on Sunday, report the Mirror.

The Manchester United striker has been struggling with the injury for two weeks after picking it up in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final clash with Bayern Munich, forcing him to miss the 4-0 victory over Newcastle last time out.

He returned for the second leg against Bayern, but required a painkilling injection in order to get through it, with Rooney’s performance in the tie clearly of a diminished nature, provoking a string of criticism levelled at him and manager David Moyes.

It was feared that he could be forced to have an extended period out of the side, but the England striker has been medically cleared to take part in Manchester United’s run-in to the season – starting with a trip to former stamping ground, Goodison Park.

Rooney came through the youth system at Everton before his £24million move to Manchester United, with his acrimonious departure still causing him to take a large amount of abuse from the home faithful at Goodison.

This year he will not be alone in those stakes, with David Moyes making his first return to the club he managed for 11 years, while Marouane Fellaini also makes his first return after his £27million move in the summer.

Wayne Rooney has created 53 chances for Manchester United this season, claiming 10 assists. Patrice Evra is the second most creative, carving out 34 opportunities.
