Jose Mourinho is a manager who has divided opinions wherever he has managed. He is a legendary manager who managed to obtain the near impossible UCL with Porto, and a scintillating treble with Inter.
He was also one of few managers who could keep a check on the all conquering Barcelona side of Pep Guardiola. So why is it that such a legendary manger is having a tough time managing the most successful club in England?
While his spell at United cannot be considered a complete failure, the struggle he is currently facing shows that he has been a failure to some extent. He has evidently been unable to build a PL title winning team at United.
In his first season, he was able to guide United to a Europa League title, that too at the cost of not competing in the Premier League, and with United finishing the season in 6th place. United where uninspiring, but the fans believed that the best was yet to come since there were some games where the performance was excellent. United also won the FA Community Shield as well as the League Cup.
His second season was much awaited since Mourinho teams always clicked in the second seasons. The team started the league with a bang via a series of impressive displays, and the fans were hopeful.
However, as the season progressed, the team began underperforming. But still players were motivated and some impressive displays were provided by the team in the 1st half of the season.
In January, Mourinho brought Sanchez in from Arsenal, and that was the point were all went wrong. Performance levels decreased, and Martial and Rashford lost their mojo as Sanchez was given their position when the obvious and glaring position that needed filling was the right wing.
The only highlight of the 2nd half of the season was the comeback victory against Manchester City. United finished the season 2nd behind Manchester City, and crashed out of the Champions League against Sevilla in the round of 16.
By his third season, it became obvious that many positions needed filling. The team currently looks shambolic while playing, and United currently sits mid table in their worst start to a Premier League season.
The transfer market was not used effectively, youngsters are not provided enough chances, and the fans are tired of believing that a change will come. There is no real attacking intent, and all this points to one obvious fact - Mourinho and United were not an ideal match to begin with.
United needs a manager who can play attacking football, who can build a team, who can promote youngsters, and who inspires confidence and belief. It is time United gave time and money to such a manger instead of Mourinho who looks bereft of ideas, and who is quick to criticise his players when things go wrong.
We can only hope that United does this sooner rather than later to avoid falling further down the pecking order.
