What went wrong with England at the World Cup?

The current FIFA World Cup has ended in another debacle for England, which was highly predictable for anyone who watches England on a consistent basis. It was a disjointed effort from a team of stars who always play as a group of individuals rather than a team. What exactly went wrong this time is a question that the English media wants to dissect. Well, it’s simple. Mr. Hodgson was naïve enough to think that the players at his disposal could actually somehow try and play the beautiful game.

Putting Gerrard and Henderson in the midfield and think that they could replicate the swashbuckling play of Liverpool this season was a distant dream at best. Wayne Rooney would show how great he is and rescue this England side as if he possesses the magic wand to take this team on his shoulders is as unfair as expecting that Ferguson should have managed United for the next 100 years.

Jose Mourinho for the England job?

The fact that needs to be accepted is that England cannot dominate other International giants and probably never will. So, how can they win a trophy? The answer lies in none other than Jose Mourinho. Mourinho is a master tactician and has a knack of building highly effective defensive units even when his teams might not have the required attacking flair to beat the opposition.

Countless teams have played under him under the same philosophy of not conceding and scoring that goal that gets his team the 3 points. Yes, it’s not pretty but can you really complain with his Curriculum Vitae showing a plethora of trophies. What Mourinho would bring to the table for this English team would be a highly drilled team capable of defending fantastically well so as to stop the opposition from scoring. There is a good crop of defenders with England who if nurtured properly can become excellent players.

How Jose Mourinho can inspire England

Fortunately for England, there seems to be a group of players with speed on the wings who can counter attack and help their full backs to double up on the opposing wingers. Gerrard and Lampard are in their sunset days and would properly not play for England in a major tournament. Mourinho would in all sense bring in midfielders in complete contrast to these two because he knows what his team needs in order to win. A defensive linchpin in the midfield along with a tireless destroyer would form his ideal partnership in the middle of the park to disrupt the other team so as to prevent them from playing through the Heart of England.

What he would need is a striker who can give him that goal. One name comes to mind. The pantomime villain of the English striking artillery - Wayne Rooney. He might not be the favored choice till the next world cup but you can count on Mourinho bringing out the best in him in the foreseeable future. Euros 2016 - the tournament where this defensive unit spearheaded by a rejuvenated Wayne Rooney can actually win.

Mourinho is probably the best man manager in world football today. Players playing under him swear to undying loyalty and are ready to go to war form him. That’s the mentality that needs to be instilled into the England team at this moment – “Us against the world”. If England really want to win, then they the FA needs to break the bank, beg Roman Abramovich to let him go and ask Mourinho to do the job. This seems to be their only chance.
