Chettri to Lisbon….A milestone for Indian Football?

Everyone knows about Sunil Chhetri’s move to Portuguese club, Sporting Lisbon. The news has bought excitement among football fans in India. Chhetri has scored 33 goals in his 58 appearances for India. For a nation like India, which dreams of playing in the FIFA World Cup despite of its 163rd ranking, it is exciting news. But, the big question is, will his move prove to be an important milestone for Indian Football in the future?

This is not the first time that an Indian player has played in an European club. Chhetri, who has trialled before in European clubs like Coventry City, Glasgow Rangers and Kansas City, could not succeed in the trials . He could not get a starting place in the Kansas city line up, during his time at the MLS club. Rangers and Coventry rejected Chettri after trials.

However, some football experts think that Chhetri’s move to Lisbon’s B side was a sensible decision. Chettri will have to work hard to prove himself at Lisbon. Chettri needs to earn respect from his teammates and coaching staff. If yes, then there will be a possibility of him playing in the first team and if not, then he risks being dropped out from the team.

Despite its huge population, India is ranked far off in the FIFA rankings. Also, Cricket is the ‘religion’ for almost all of India. But, if Chhetri makes a mark in Lisbon, then certainly the scenario can change.

Also, European clubs will show interest in Indian talent and at least a handful of footballers can be expected to join some of Europe’s top clubs in the next 10-15 years. The ‘Next- Gen’ Indian kids will certainly strive to make Football as serious profession.

Though, it will be known whether Chhetri’s European venture will be a small step or a milestone for Indian football. But, Indian’s will hope that Chettri shines in Lisbon and takes India one step ahead in World Football.
