Wayne Rooney: Win against Liverpool means nothing if we don't beat Aston Villa

Wayne Rooney talks about why beating Aston Villa is very important

Manchester United skipper Wayne Rooney has said that the Red Devils’s 2-1 win over rivals Liverpool last month will count for nothing if they don't defeat their next opponent Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Saturday.

United are currently fourth in the table with 59 points in 30 matches and a win for them against Villa, would take them 8 points clear of the Reds, who take on Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium in an early kick-off on the same day.

“There are still eight games left. We are in a good position at the minute so it's in our own hands, so have to make sure we do it."

"That means nothing if we don't beat Aston Villa on Saturday. Obviously Arsenal play Liverpool as well on Saturday, so if we can get the win against Villa that will be an even better result than Liverpool was for us,” Rooney told reporters.

Carrick has been fantastic: Rooney

The 29-year-old also lavished praise on the performance of Michael Carrick in the international friendly that was held against Italy in Turin a few days back, saying that the 33-year-old is viewed as being an underperformer, but has definitely played a vital role in United winning several trophies in the past few years.

"I think he is a fantastic player. He has been a big reason why, at United, we have won so many trophies over the last few years. So from myself and his teammates, he has not been underestimated,” Rooney said.
