Commonwealth Games 2014: India win 3 medals on Day 2

After a thunderous start on the opening day of the Commonwealth Games, Indian athletes continued to perform on a good note as they won three medals on the second day of the quadrennial event. Of the three medals won, shooters grabbed two while weightlifting added one to the medal tally.

16 year old shooter gave India the first medal

16-year-old shooter from Amritsar, Malaika Goel gave India the first medal of the day as she bagged the silver medal in the 10m Air Pistol category. Former World No. 1 Heena Sidhu, who finished on the top of the points table in the qualification round failed miserably in the finals as she was eliminated after 12 shots, and finished in a disappointing 7th position.

Malaika Goel, who is the youngest member of the Indian contingent scored a satisfactory 378 in the qualification round to finish 4th.

In a closely-fought final contest, Malaika with a total of 197.1 points lost to Singapore's Shun Xie Teo (198.6) by a margin of 1.6 points. Canada’s Dorothy Ludwig won the bronze medal.

Abhinav Bindra’s first individual gold medal at CWG

2008 Beijing Olympics gold medalist Abhinav Bindra won the 3rd gold medal for the nation as the ace marksman scored a blistering 205.3 in the finals to clinch the gold in men’s 10m Air Rifle event.

Bindra, who is the first Indian individual Olympic gold medalist finished third in the qualification round, but he did not make a single mistake in the final and proved his dominance by setting a new games record of 205.3 in the final.

This was Bindra’s last Commonwealth Games. "This is my last Commonwealth Games. Five CWG and nine medals, it is enough for me," Bindra said while speaking to Indian journalists.

Fifth medal for India in Weightlifting

After winning four medals on the opening day of the games, Indian lifters gave a decent performance on the second day as 22-year old girl from Andhra Pradesh Santoshi Matsa grabbed the bronze medal in women’s 53 kg event. Another Indian lifter Swati Singh finished 4th.

Matsa lifted a total of 188kg (83 in snatch and 105 in clean and jerk) to win the fifth medal in the weightlifting and tenth overall. Swati, who finished 4th in the last edition of the games again failed to make it to the podium as she lifted a total of 183kg.

So at the end of day 2; English team with a total of 32 medals (12G + 11S +9B) holds the top spot, while Aussies with 32 medals (11G + 9S + 12B) are placed second. The home team with total of 7 gold, 3 silver and 5 bronze are on third position. Canada with 15 medals (7G + 3S + 5B) is at fourth place. India occupy the fifth place with 10 medals (3G + 4S + 3B).
