Overall, it was a very good day for the young Indian athletes as they grabbed 3 medals (one gold, one silver and one bronze) on the penultimate day of the 2nd Asian Youth Games being held in Nanjing, China.

Young Indian runner Anjana Dhavalu Thamake won the Gold medal in the girls’ 800m event. Anjana Thamake clocked a personal best of 2 minutes 11.47 seconds to grab the third Gold medal for the country.

Savinder Kaur of Malaysia, with the timing of 2:14.14, won the Silver, whereas Sri Lanka’s K Dilhani Fernando (2:15.72) won the Bronze medal.

Indian Squash player Kush Kumar had won the first Gold medal for India at the Games, while yesterday Rahul Venkat Ragala had clinched country’s second Gold medal in the boys’ 77-kg weightlifting event.

Second good news of the day came from girl’s triple jump event where India’s Rochelle Macfarlane Maria won the Silver medal. Maria jumped to her personal best of 12.38m in her fifth and penultimate attempt to win the silver. Ma Yue of China, with the best jump of 12.55m, won the Gold medal and Lee Hyeonjeong of Korea, with the best jump of 12.28m, won the Bronze.

In boys’ 3000m event, Abhishek Pal, with the timing of 8 minutes 45.72 seconds, won the Bronze medal. Liu Hongliang of China (8:25:86) won the Gold medal and Chikashi Ikeda of Japan (8:45:04) won the Silver medal.

In tennis, young Indian star Garvit Batra lost 6-4 6-7 6-0 to the 2nd seeded Jurence Mendoza of Philippines in the semifinal. With this loss, Indian challenge in tennis is now over.

In squash, Indian girls team lost to the top seeded Malaysian team 0-2 in the semifinals. Indian boys team defeated Hong Kong 2-1 in the semifinals and will now play Malaysia in the Gold medal match tomorrow.

In swimming, Avantika Chavan Sudhir finished last in the semifinal of the girls’ 50m backstroke event. In the boys’ 50m backstroke event, India’s Rohit Imoliya finished 4th with a timing of 27.92 seconds.

The Indian athletes are participating in this event as ‘Independent Olympic Athletes’ due to IOC’s ban on IOA. The Indian contingent, with a total of 11 medals (3 gold, 3 silver and 5 bronze), are currently on the 9th spot in the medal tally.

China, with a total of 88 medals (44 gold 22 silver and 22 bronze), are on the top of the chart followed by South Korea and Japan.
