Football

1973: Birthday of Real Madrid and Brazil legend, Roberto Carlos.

1986: Birthday of Man City and Belgium defender Vincent Kompany.

1993: Manchester United take the lead in the title race in the first ever Premier League season, 1992/93, after beating Sheffield Wednesday 2-1. They would not relinquish the lead and won the league soon after by a whopping 10 points.

Cricket

1990: Curtly Ambrose of WI takes a remarkable 8-45 in a single innings of a Test against England in Bridgetown.

2005: India became the first Asian team to reach the finals of the Women’s World Cup, which they lost to Australia.

Basketball

1953: Minneapolis Lakers win their 7th NBA Championship title, beating New York Knicks 4-1.

Golf

1916: First ever professional golf tournament is held.

1916: Professional Golfers Association of America is created in New York City.
