Five companions every golfer craves

Golf is a sport where you spend a lot of time, when compared to other sports, to get a result. Spread over multiple days, golf requires a lot of equipment, some of which are absolutely necessary.

Here, we have a look at 5 companions every golfer craves for:

Divot Repair Tool

Divot Repair Tool

Golfers treasure the land they walk on, treading with caution as they march relentlessly through the courses that taunt their talent and imagination. This is perhaps the smallest yet most highly valued accompaniment in a golfer’s arsenal besides the clubs.

The DRT is used to mend the dimples caused on the greens by the landing of the ball. It is also handy in helping the golfer understand the pace of the greens. The tool is used to repair divots caused when a golfer takes out a chunk off the floor with the club.

Ball Marker

Ball Marker

The ball marker is typically flat and round, used often to mark the position of the ball on the course, especially on the greens. In moist weather, it allows the golfer to remove the ball for drying and cleaning by the caddie before the next shot is taken.

Golfers are very attached to their markers, bonding with them with an inexplicable sentimental attachment. Women have long used magnetic markers, often stuck to their caps. Men on the other hand seem to prefer the poker chip markers. In the past golfers have also used coins as markers, but then it still is an option when there are no more of them left in the bag.

On the greens, there are times when a chip could come of the way of another golfer’s putt. The marker is allowed to be moved temporarily, but failure to place it back on the original spot leads to a penalty.

Shoes

Golf Shoes

Footwear has an important role to play in determining the fortunes of the golfer. There are two key elements – first, they spend a lot of time walking in them, so you would want to ensure that pair on your bag is comfortable to wear and light on the feet.

More importantly, they provide necessary balance and protection to the golfer during the swing. A good shoe provides the golfer necessary footing during the swing, ensuring that the shot can be played as naturally as possible.

The technology around shoes has made significant progress in the past few decades – and irrespective of being made in leather or synthetic fibre, they offer similar function and comfort to golfers.

Gloves

Golf Gloves

You will find that golfers are not very pleased with the texture on their palms. Golf is a game of habit and the repetitive act of wielding and striking the ball through practice and tournaments leaves them scarred with callouses.

Gloves protect the hand and normally golfers use a single glove on the leading hand, the left in the case of right handed golfers and the other way round for lefties.

It offers them protection from wear and tear, besides being one of the most elegant accessories in a golfer’s kit.

Clubs

Golf Clubs

That brings us to the most important companion to the golfer. The club is nearly an extension of the golfer’s arm, flowing into motion powered by the energy from the arms and the torso. Professional tournaments allow a maximum of 14 clubs in the bag of a golfer.

There are essentially three types of clubs – Woods, Irons and Putters.

Among the woods – there are three mainly used clubs – 1, 3 and 5 form the full set for most golfers. The first of them is typically used off the tee, with the rare exception perhaps on a very long par-5. The 3-wood is used to reach the green from the fairway, while the 5-wood is used when the ball is not very far from the green.

The Irons are the largest part of a golfers collection. Ranging from 2 to 9-iron graded by the loft or angle on the face of the club. The higher the number of the iron, the greater is the angle on the club face. The pitching wedge and sand wedge are also part of this collection.

The putter determines the fortunes of a golfer like no other club. It has a nearly flat face and is only used when the ball is on the greens. In recent times, the putter was a major bone of contention, with the design of the longish belly putter causing furore. Eventually the PGA TOUR banned the belly putter, returning golfers to the traditional shorter putters.
