16-year-old hockey player drowns at sea, washes ashore in Chennai beach

What's the story?

What was meant to be a fun-filled time at the beach, turned out to be fatal for 16-year-old hockey player S Prajeesh in Chennai. The youngster is said to have visited the beach with his teammates when they found him missing after a swim.

His body was washed ashore the next day and he was confirmed dead by the police after having claimed that it was a clear case of drowning.

In case you didn't know...

S. Prajeesh was a student of class 11in Arignar Anna Government Higher Secondary school. Hailing from Coonoor, the 16-year-old had travelled to Chennai to play at the hockey tournament taking place in Nehru stadium. He was accompanied by 14 other boys.

The heart of the matter

The youngsters played a match on Saturday, after which they decided to visit Chennai's famous Marina Beach. However, on being questioned, their seniors said that the youngsters had not informed them about the plan. Prajeesh had gone with 10 other boys to the beach and it is only after their phone numbers were unreachable that their seniors began to search for them.

After having caught up with them, the boys told the seniors that Prajeesh was missing. The police were informed and a search was carried out across the entire beach but in vain. On being informed, his parents rushed to Chennai immediately.

Prajeesh is said to have informed his parents about his visit to the beach, but he did not inform any of his seniors. According to his teammates, he could have possibly gone to the shore after a short swim but went missing thereafter once his teammates got back to leave.

After a futile search, however, tragically, the youngster's body washed ashore the next afternoon. The Marina beach police retrieved his body and sent it to Omandurar multi-speciality hospital.

The police have stated that it was a case of drowning and nothing suspicious was to be found.

What's next?

The body has been sent to the hospital for a post-mortem, while further investigations are underway.
