Commentary

We now come to the conclusion of our coverage of the 2023 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup for the day. Pakistan have a break of just over three weeks before they travel to Australia for a three-match Test series. As for England, they'll make their way across the globe at a similar time frame - to the West Indies for a white-ball tour; their journey for Africa 2027 might begin right away! There's just one game remaining in the league stage of this World Cup - hosts India take on the Netherlands at the M. Chinnaswamy stadium in Bangalore tomorrow, a game apt for preparation of a blockbuster semi-final clash against New Zealand next week. Fakhar Zaman's heroics against New Zealand a week ago kept Pakistan's hopes alive in the tournament. Their final game against England was set to be a decisive one at the time, but results over the course of the week gradually took the decisiveness away. Both sides ended up going into the game with very little to achieve - mathematically, Pakistan still were in contention, but it was never going to be feasible. Plenty of changes are in store for both sides going into the future - more so for Pakistan, with rumours of Babar Azam stepping away from captaincy.

Jos Buttler (England captain): Nice to put in a good performance and end the tournament, ultimately, a disappointing tournament. It sinks in more right now actually, feel more emotional about it right now. Lots to reflect on, but nice to finish like this today. We got off to a really good start, the guys in the middle set it up brilliantly at the end. That's the kind of thing we know we're capable of, haven't shown it enough. We should have been able to cope without Ben (Stokes) early in the tournament, lots of us haven't performed as we wanted to. We know Ben's a class player, to not have him for a few games was a challenge, but we were a good enough team to deal with that. We spoke about making good memories today, and walk off the field with some big smiles. Today was a good day, regardless of wherever we go from here. He's (Willey) been fantastic, post 2015, coming into the squad, playing so many games, he always found a way. That's his hallmark, he has so many skills, he's a proper competitor and team-man, and will be missed in the dressing room. To be a player of the match is a big thing for him in his last game. I think the drastic change of playing style isn't going to be like that from 2015. It's just about making sure we push on from here. There are a few things we need to change and build something new. Doesn't mean there'll be a major clear-out, it's about making sure we are a top team again.

Babar Azam (Pakistan captain): Very disappointed with the performance of our team. We are trying our best but unfortunately a couple of close games and after three games we got momentum. If we had won those games it could have been a different story but there were a lot of mistakes with the bowling and fielding. To be honest we gave 20-30 runs extra. We did not bowl up to the mark. After the 10th over there were a couple of loose deliveries and the spinners weren't able to give us enough wickets. (On the spinners struggling this tournament) It's a fact - in the middle-overs you need to take wickets. If your spinners do not take wickets you will struggle and then rely on your fast-bowlers. The pitches are very true. (How does this team move forward in this format?) We'll sit together and see. We'll take a lot of positives from the last six weeks. I will try my best to pitch in my experience.

David Willey bags the Player of the Match award in his final international appearance. Here's waht he has to say: Obviously the tournament hasn't gone according to plan as a while which is a disappointment. But it's nice to go out on a high. For me to perform and enjoy my last few games and get to 100 wickets is special for me. It would have been nice to have that and make the final as well but small wins. You only have to look around the dressing room, we've got phenomenal players and massive talents. No doubt we've underperformed here and that's disappointing. (Did not getting the central contract motivate him?) Yeah I think Keysey (Rob Key) said to me hopefully I can prove him wrong. I think I've done that in the last few games. But not too many get the opportunity to walk away on their own terms and I'm blessed to have that. If I look back to my academy times and growing up, I was never the best player. I've just found a way with my resilience to keep chipping away and be a part of this great group of white-ball cricketers. My wife back home will be watching - many thanks to her, she has pulled me up many times. Proud to pull on this shirt and stand for the national anthem. (Any fond moment looking back at his international career?) That (T20) World Cup win in Australia, my family there and my kids running around was very special after the disappointment of 2019. Every time you take a wicket and go out there, it is very special.

Having been faced with a target of 338, Pakistan needed a strong start from their top-order. They were far from getting one as Willey, with his movement off the air, made early inroads by claiming the wickets of both openers. Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan looked to build the innings together, nurdling the ball around for singles while finding the boundary on occasions.

Babar was severe on Chris Woakes early on as the England all-rounder missed his line and length on several occasions. That was the case with England after the fall of the two openers - while they kept a lid from one end, runs were leaking from the other. Babar kept timing the ball well, as Rizwan settled into an accumulating role as the chase progressed.

Rizwan, though, was itching to up the ante and take on the spinners. Both he and Babar perished to rather poor shots - Babar went for a half-hearted pull to a rising delivery from Atkinson, and Rizwan, trying to take Moeen Ali on by charging down the wicket, got into a terrible tangle altogether and had his stumps re-arranged. While Saud Shakeel and Agha Salman played themselves in, Pakistan were lagging behind by then itself.

Shakeel, having struggled against Atkinson initially, managed to break free eventually, but departed trying to paddle sweep a googly from Rashid. Salman kept the chase going as wickets kept tumbling at the other end, and brought up a well-deserved half-century. He fell shortly afterwards, holing out to Stokes at mid on, handing David Willey his 100th ODI wicket in the process.

Pakistan's number 10 and 11, Mohammad Wasim and Haris Rauf, put up a thoroughly entertaining display towards the end, but Pakistan had far too many still left to chase. The final pair put on a partnership of 53 before Rauf found Stokes at long on with a mis-timed slog. England sign off with a win - all smiles in their camp as the players walk back.

That's it! After an entertaining, belated display from Pakistan, both teams 2023 World Cup campaigns come to an end! It was fun while it lasted, but it was always going to end England's way! It's England end a forgettable campaign with a win!

43.3 Chris Woakes to Haris Rauf, HIGH IN THE AIR...AND TAKEN! At long last, England break this entertaining final wicket partnership. Pace off as Woakes lands it in the slot on the off stump. Rauf swings across the line again before it hits the toe-end and balloons a mile up into the sky. Stokes runs back at mid-on and he's safe as houses alright. He makes a tough one look simple as he clings on and that brings the campaign of both these teams to a close. England win by 93 runs and secure their berth in the Champions Trophy to be played in 2025!

Wasim still goes through with the ramp before it hits some part of his body - possibly the grill of his helmet too - before Buttler puts in a despairing dive to his left!

A 50-run partnership for the last wicket! England have been too lax in ending the game, and Pakistan's 10 and 11 have made them pay for it!
