MMA News: Actor from 'Harry Potter' films makes career change to MMA fighter

Herdman en route to winning his MMA debut

Harry Potter purists would choose the books over the movies any day, the former by far being the more memorable. It’s been five years since the last Harry Potter movie and most of the stars of the series are well on their own paths in the world of film, theater and music.

One of them though, chose a road no map would have presented. Josh Herdman, better known to Potterheads as Malfoy’s cohort Gregory Goyle, might have not been the quickest with a wand, but the same can’t be said for his hands. Or legs for that matter.

Reel muscle to real badass

The 28-year-old recently made his MMA debut, earning a Unanimous Decision over Janusz Walachowski. The fight took place in Romford. When asked about his eyebrow-raising decision, Herdman said, “I chose MMA because I love the sport. It's raw, exciting and unpredictable.

“I find it more interesting than boxing although I appreciate the beauty and art in boxing. It also made sense to move onto MMA because of my jiu-jitsu training. I would like a few amateur fights first to get me started and where it goes from there, who knows?"

Herdman’s training in Japanese Jiu-Jitsu spans nearly five years and one could say that fighting’s in his genes. His father, Martin, was a boxer and played professional Rugby league. He also featured in the cult British TV show Coronation Street.

The inevitable question about the future of his acting career cropped up and Herdman responded by saying, “I haven't fallen out of love with acting. I still have an agent and still go for auditions. It's just a little bit like playing the lottery for a living. I don't see it so much as a career change; I am passionate about both acting and fighting.”
