Rio Olympics 2016: Dattu Bhokanal's heat and chances of qualifying

Dattu Bhokanal in action

The Rio Olympics are finally upon us and one of the first events – involving an Indian athlete – is rowing. We have Dattu Bhokanal, from Maharashta, who will take part in the single sculls event at the Lagao stadium.

The 25-year-old is in the first heat of the tournament along with five other rowers from around the globe. Bhokanal qualified for the Rio Olympics after winning a silver medal in the FISA Asian and Oceanian Rowing championships.

He'll line up alongside Luigi Teilemb from Vanuatu, Juan Carlos Cabrera from Mexico, Armandas Kelmelis from Lithuania, Angel Fournier Rodriguez from Cuba and Jaruwat Saeksuk from Thailand.

Bhokanal will need to qualify in the first three of the event to make it straight into the quarter-finals of the tournament. If he fails to do, he'll have another chance by partaking in the repechage which is to be held tomorrow at the same time.

Crowd favourite and rowing legend Mahe Drysdale is in the Heat 2 and will hope to progress to the further rounds which hiccups.
